Why are there still monkeys?

It's a common ploy in the argument over evolution. Morons who are bad at science trot it out every so often. If we evolved from Chimpanzees, why are there still chimps? HMMMM???

It's such a flawed argument that even the 'Answers In Genesis' folks have it listed as a tactic to avoid. Do you know how BAD something has to be to have creationists avoid it????

Which is why it doesn't surprise me when Stephen Baldwin ponies it up on Celebrity Big Brother UK. He's an addict that replaced drugs with religion. My guess is the loss of brain cells from the drugs made him incapable of logical thought.

So any, he brought the same old mantra out. And all of science laughed. But as always, it was parroted by the mentally challenged.

So here it is again. We did not evolve from Chimps. Chimps and bonobo monkeys both descended from the same common ancestor as we did. We can tell through fossil remains and DNA comparisons. In terms of family, it's easiest to call us cousins.

Likewise, that ancestor shared a common ancestor with gorillas. Something like a second cousin.

And THAT ancestor shared an ancestor with orangutans. A pseudo-third cousin.

So, no... we didn't evolve from chimps. But then again, science never claimed we did. It's pop culture that has taken that viewpoint. It's easier for the masses to understand if it's something simple like 'evolved from' than it is to explain the entire tree of life. It's a simple sound bite. Easy to use, easy to fail.

Regardless, I suggest you get your science from scientists. Leave the acting to people like Stephen Baldwin. On second thought... he's not very good at acting either.

Instead of "why are there monkeys" it's more like "why does the press even bother with the same ol' tripe?" I suspect the answer, much like the pie-in-the-face slapstick routine, is "simply because it never fails to amuse." It's easy for normal people to get discouraged, but ethically correct to try and be considerate of the mentally disabled. By definition thinking just isn't their strong point.

1. got a 403 referrer error when linking from Google. You might want to fix that unless Google is no longer your friend.

2. If you think Stephen is bad, maybe you should read @adamsbaldwin sometime.

I'll have the admin take a peek at it. Strange.

However, I'm terrified of people dumber than Stephen. Naturally, now I have to go look.
