Urban Outfitters: Profanity Is Just Profanity

Urban Outfitters has evidently hit the ire of the conservative crowd again with some of their profanity laced products. I can't say I agree with the conservative, Bible thumpin' folks entirely on this issue, but I can't say I disagree completely either. I just have different reasons for not liking it.

The words "fuck" and "shit" are just words. They are words I typically try to use sparingly. Not necessarily because they are considered offensive by many people, but because those words really lack any sense of creativity. Anyone can say them to in a lame attempt to make themselves appear "hip" and "edgy".

Therefore, in my not so humble opinion, Urban Outfitters using "fuck" or "f*ck" and "shit" of "sh!t" on their products is just a bit lame. Sorry, personally, I am not impressed. In addition, a lot of their crap looks like a crude version of stuff that used to come out of those little dispensers lined up by the supermarket door for which I used to beg my mother for a quarter when I was a kid. Some of their other stuff looks like someone snuck into my garage and fished it out of my rag barrel.

I won't be digging into my pocket to stuff any of their stuff in someone's stocking this year. If I get that desperate I might be able to recycle something out of that rag bucket and scribble "f*ck" with a magic marker on it ...

You won't buy it because it's tacky. I won't buy it because it's not my style. But the American Family association and it's yearly crusade of purity can go fuck itself. Besides giving UO free advertising by broadcasting their objections, they don't understand that society isn't fixed at some point in the 1950s. Language and mores aren't fixed things. People under 40 don't have an aversion to using the word Fuck in adult company. It's not taboo. It's not even generally considered offensive.

I guess my main point was lost. Urban Outfitters selling stuff with profanity seems like they are trying to market to 13-yr olds. Only adolescents think profanity ups the "hip" quotient. In most situations curse words are just words. They are not pretty words, but they do convey information. I prefer the visage of "sunshine" or "cute kitty" to "shit", but "shit" does convey information even if it's that you are annoyed.

As far as "taboos" are concerned, I will say there is a time and place for everything, or avoiding somethings. If, for example, I were interviewing someone for a job and they used foul language they would not be hired. I wouldn't care if they were the most brilliant scientist with a glowing resume and references. If someone uses foul language during an interview it shows poor judgement and/or lack of restraint, two things I do not want to deal with.
