The Myth behind the Myth of Gun Dangers

Gun control is front and center again. All over the place I'm seeing posts, rants, raves, complaints on both sides of the gun control argument. The anti-gun control crowd loves to spin numbers, pull on everyone's heart-strings and spread misinformation. Each post's content is as predictable as the sun rise.

Here are some facts, links to the facts, and some hard truths.

How many people are killed each year by gun accidents?
On average 2 each day according to FBI.GOV statistics (789 in 2009)

How many people are killed each year by the use of a gun while committing a crime?
On average, 38 each day according to FBI.GOV statistics

How many people are killed by drunk drivers in traffic accidents?
On average, 12,000 each year (35 daily avg) according to MADD.

How many people are killed in traffic accidents NOT alcohol related?
On average, 25000 each year (65 daily avg) according to MADD and the CDC

How many homicides yearly (includes weapons, fists, hands feet)?
On average 15,000 yearly according to FBI.GOV statistics

How many people are killed yearly by evil black assault rifles with mega capacity magazines?
On average, 475 yearly according to FBI.GOV statistics

How many people are killed yearly by fists and feet?
On average, 900 yearly according to FBI.GOV statistics

How many people are killed by blunt objects (hammers, clubs etc)?
On average, 625 yearly according to FBI.GOV statistics

The truth sucks, I know.

And may I also point out that those drunk driving statistics are post the DWI crack-downs since the '80s and '90s. We still have numbers like that after higher drinking ages, lower blood alcohol levels to define DWI, stiffer penalties. Also consider the safety of cars now versus the '70s and '80s.

Guns are out there. Gun laws, like those recently passed in NY, will simply make criminals out of people who have not and are not likely to ever hurt someone with a gun.

Why the switch in the way the statistics are reported? Guns are in days (appearing lower until you read the fine print) and everything higher by a huge amount.

By the numbers up there more people are killed each day committing a crime with a gun than a drunk driver (38 to 35). Seems like a priority to me.

There is no switch in the way they are reported. MADD split apart traffic accidents between "under the influence" and non-influenced causes.

Just add the two traffic statistics together and you get 100 killed daily in traffic accidents vs 38 killed by guns. Likewise, the homicide numbers are split apart too. Please re-read.

The beauty of these numbers is that there is absolutely no "spin" being applied... these are real factual indisputable numbers put out by the FBI and MADD. Most importantly these stats add non-biased context into this anti-gun issue.
