Megan Gillan, quit skipping school!

Macclesfield High in Britain does not allow truants to go to the prom. The school sent a letter home to Miss Gillan's parents informing them that the young lady better improve her attendance quickly. I'm sure Megan would love to comply, if she were still alive. Her father found her dead in her room about two months ago.

Headmaster Ged Ward apologized for the "software problem". Mr. Ward lead tributes to Miss Gillan after her death, so he was aware of her passing. He sent out to about 150 letters to students with poor attendance and evidently signed each. Perhaps Mr. Ward should read stuff he signs and see who it is being sent to. I have sent out over 100 letters in a day and I at least look at who its going to make sure it makes sense and it takes minimal effort.

I feel for the Gillans going through this painful reminder, as if their daughter's absence it not reminder enough.

P.S. - Not double checking your automated system is not a very good way of doing business. If I sent an official letter criticizing a person, knowing they were deceased, my head would be handed to me and I would be too ashamed to show my face in that community again. My superiors would not accept the: "It was a computer error" crap. That is why I check my correspondence prior to it going out. Perhaps Mr. Ward learned this lesson in a rather uncomfortable way.

What a pathetic load of lies - you have got the article completely wrong. Firstly it wasn't Mr Ward who signed it, it was a printed signature by the deputy head Mr White, and the letter was mail merged. How can you read a letter you never touch? I would also like to say that the letter wasn't sent out to 150 students with poor attendance, it was sent out to everyone in the year as a reminder of the criteria to be able to go to the prom. I even received one myself with 100% attendance. I would suggest that you at least try to understand the topic that you are writing about, as your complete incompetence has stood out to me.

I comment on what I read - If there was incompetence it was in the reporting of the story. Hope you criticized the press. Perhaps I should not have assumed the press is any more thorough on that "side of the pond" than it is here - which isn't much.

The fact remains, people need to check up on automated processes or bad/embarrassing things happen.

"Matt" - I may "chat some bad shit", but at least I use punctuation and attempt proper grammar when I do. So much for the Queen's English, eh, chap? Maybe you should try to go to class instead of blogging.

"Pupil" - Perhaps you can tutor Matt so he can string a few words together coherently. It is obvious from your writing skills that you have the 100% attendance you claim. Maybe you can aspire to journalism.

Thats what our congressional representatives just did with this 3 trillion dollar bailout. They printed a bunch of stuff and never gave everyone a chance to read it, they just all signed it in a hurry so we'd never get a chance to bitch about what was in the bill.

I apologise for the way I commented on your article. I understand that you can only comment on what you read elsewhere in the press, but I was just angry for the way the press have presented the story, and in a way which exaggerates the points and includes some very false information.

I just wanted to clear up some misconceptions in the press that the letter had been handsigned, when in fact it was a printed signature. Also, some of the reports in the press which claim the letter 'threatened' her and 'banned' her from the prom are completely untrue, it was just a letter to remind her parents of the requirements to be allowed to attend the prom, written with the best intentions. The school should not be blamed the way they have for such a simple mistake.

As for my claim to have 100% attendance; it is entirely true, I would not like to miss a day of school considering how important it is for me to achieve the qualifications that I need to progress further into education.
