Great Guns

It doesn't seem to end. Last week some douchebag shoots up a bar, this week it's a movie theater. Apparently this is what makes America great right? Anyone can go buy a gun, legally or illegally, and shoot as many people as they can.

Of course if more people had guns then more people would have gotten shot. Maybe even the shooter. Or maybe not.

Sorry, but guns don't equal freedom. Not in this day and age. The notion that gun owners can form a militia and overthrow the government is nothing less than ludicrous. Hunting is a pastime, not a necessity. And target shooting is equally well accomplished with air guns as with gunpowder.

We don't ~need guns in our lives. But the NRA has the money and power to jam the notion down everyone's throat that guns are essential to the American Way. As far as I'm concerned it only helped another ten people die needlessly.

I think I might disagree about one point. I think the Arab Spring demonstrated clearly that rebellion is possible with little more than a properly motivated group and some light arms. You could argue that the American military wouldn't be so easily overwhelmed, but I'm not sure you could definitely say it would be impossible to beat.

Although it is frustrating that lunatics choose guns for their deeds, guns aren't just going to just go away.

I disagree that hunting is a "pastime". It may be for some, but I have met people for whom it is a way to survive. Three of four deer from the season in the freezer means meat on the table. I guess they could use a bow and arrow or a spear, but shot gun or rifle is what works for them. Could they find a better job or suck off the government teat? Perhaps. It might mean abandoning their homes for uncertainty in more urban areas where they need to worry about a roof over their heads as well. It might also rob them of their dignity. In addition, food pantries are spread thin these days so help with food may not be readily available.

Of course the people I am talking about are so poor that they don't think of going to movie theaters, if there even is one within 50 miles. These people are too busy working to survive to have the time to contemplate killing for sport. They may be a small percentage of the population, but they do exist.
