Now before everyone gets all in a tizzy and the sex fiends get all in a lather (hope they're using soap anyway) this is about the oil spill in the gulf. (Wait, was that a collective "awwwwww" I just heard?)
Case in point: At what juncture does a "contained catastrophy" become a world-class nightmare? Better question: How can anyone possibly think they can lie, deceive, deny, or hide a 1x5 mile wide slick on the ocean? Or 5000 gallons of crude spewing per day (a paltry 5x the amount reported)?
The only answer that I can think of is they either had a lot of drugs, or needed the time to dump their stock fast. Because something of this magnitude just can't be swept under the rug. Especially since carpets don't work well on water. Seriously however, this is a global catastrophe, and there was nothing to be gained by just waiting around and not enlisting all the possible assistance within the first moments of the crisis.
BP has said they will shoulder the costs of the clean up. I suppose they have no choice but to say that right now. I also fully expect they will squeal like a stuck pig when the actual numbers become available. Because it's going to be massive. It also in no way addresses the long term costs to the environment and industries that make their living from it.
I suppose the thing that galls me the most is the gullible nature of our government. Why the fuck would *anyone* take BP's word for it that this was a "containable crisis?" It's like a little kid that just flooded the bathroom accidentally-on purpose by flushing his underwear just to see what would happen. They'd be crazy to admit the truth before being caught. I knew this, everyone damn well knew this, so why in hell didn't the people who are paid to cast a watchful eye over us all not know this? And don't even think of saying "well of course they knew they could trust the petroleum industry..." or I will come over there and beat you around the head and shoulders.
''I am frightened for the country, for the environment,'' David Kennedy, assistant chief of the National Ocean Service at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press. ''This is a very, very big thing, and the efforts that are going to be required to do anything about it, especially if it continues on, are just mind-boggling.''
No, what's really mind boggling is the fact that you waited this long to figure out just how fucked things really were without going there and finding out first hand. Dammit! Do the job you're paid and trusted to do would'ja?
