The Cheney family almost never fails to make me embarrassed. This time it's Liz, not Dick. Admittedly, this is something of a switch of cast, but they both peddle the same bullshit 'un-Americanism' mixed with irrational fear mongering.

Liz is the head of an organizational called "Keep America Safe". Their primary focus recently has been the 'al Qaeda 7'. It sounds like a bunch of terrorists in a cave in Pakistan. It's supposed to. That's the fear mongering part.

Who are the 7? Well, they're seven unnamed lawyers who represented Gitmo detainees during federally mandated trials. Two other lawyers were named, but not these seven. So Liz and her cohorts have been demonizing these lawyers and insinuating that they're un-American for representing the terrorists. Some of them were hired by the Department of Justice.

One spokesperson for Keep America Safe went further and claimed that the lawyers, by representing their clients in closed court proceedings, smeared the American government, and propagandized on behalf of terrorists, which is basically a stone's throw away from treason.

They've gone so far as to put up a web ad that openly questions their values and actions during a time of war.

I'm going to back track here for a minute.Take a trip in the time machine to a 1770. A time of revolt and revolution in the American colonies. British soldiers were accused of shooting into unarmed crowd. They were to be put before a trial of locals who were incensed and began the trial with many preconceptions of the events. But John Adams took the case and defended the soldiers. The second President of the United States, a Framer of the Deceleration of Independence, and Constitution (and... a far better person than Dick or Liz Cheney), stood up and provided defense to a group of people reviled by the public because he thought it was a basic right that they should be afforded.

These lawyers did nothing but follow in the footsteps of great men. The provided a service that the defendants were required to have available to them. What the Law demanded. What the Constitution set out in stone. And what the court decreed would be done.

And Liz wants to get up on a high horse and impugn them? Smear them with this campaign of fear and hatred? Tar them with the implication that these people may not be 'American' enough to serve in our government?

No Liz. Sorry. You're pathetic. And quite frankly, you and your father are far more of a stain on our country than these seven people. They have stood up and accepted a challenge because they felt it was required of them, in order to preserve the ideals set down in the foundation of our country. You... are just another ignorant WASP built in the mold of your reviled father. He's a wretched man, and you're a wretched woman.

The first amendment lets you get to question their integrity, values and Americanism. Lucky for us that the sixth amendment gets equal weight. I'm just glad people like Adams were around when important things had to be done. If you were in his place, this country's foundations would be far more petty, selfish and unprincipled. I suppose that's the difference. Great people stand up for principle. They don't try to tear it down for short sighted goals built of hatred and fear.

You lose Liz. America is safer with the al Qaeda 7 than with you.
