Spurred by a broad coalition of religious, labor and immigrant groups, the City Council overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Tuesday to add two of the most important Muslim holy days to the public schools’ holiday calendar.

But the vote, which was nonbinding, put the Council in conflict with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who has the final say to designate the days off and has said he is resolutely opposed to the idea.

Ok I'm sorry, I'm a very tolerant person when it comes to religion but it's time for the Muslim minority to shut the fuck up. My limited research puts the American Muslim population at less then 1%. I'm betting there's almost the same number of Buddhists, Taoists, and Hindus in the US so what about them?

I'm just fucking tired of hearing about Islam and their issues. The Taliban wants to kill the French now because someone finally observed in public that making women wear bed sheets was discrimination. Yes, any fool can recognize that having to cover your entire body and face is the equivalent of slavery, but somehow Muslims call it an "honor". If it was such a fucking honor then shouldn't the men be doing it too? (Well they only do it when they want to escape by cross-dressing).

Fuck this bullshit. New York doesn't need to recognize Islam just because people are loud mouths. And Bloomberg is absolutely right in saying that it doesn't make sense to honor every religion around or kids would never be in school. Islam hasn't done much to recognize other religions (other than threatening to kill anyone that doesn't practice theirs). So screw it.

Give your freeking religion a makeover and start making it something that supports equality, freedom and peace. Then maybe it will be something worth celebrating as a country.

In NYC the percent of Muslim students, according to the NY Times, is 12%. Not a majority, but a pretty big chunk of the student population. I would venture to say that in some neighborhoods the percentage is much higher, and are likely a majority. NYC isn't so much a melting pot as a patchwork quilt.

They are only requesting two days, one of which frequently falls around Thanksgiving anyway. I would venture a guess that the Muslim kids going to public school are not the kids that are trying to isolate themselves - those parents send the kids to a Madrasa.

Furthermore, I remember when it was a big controversy over incorporating Jewish holidays, but that was done. We are a country that tries to be inclusive, and two additional holidays seems workable.

Amen. Fuck the Muslims. Of course, I think all the christian holidays should be removed too.

A few additional notes. Muslim holidays run on a lunar calendar so they're not predictable. Further they're usually "verified" by a (non-elected) body of elders who decide when it should actually be. That means up until the last week no one really knows for certain what day exactly it will be. I don't see how that's going to work with a school calendar that's decided months in advance.

And I believe that school holidays should be determined by the state and not the district. Maybe there's 12% in the City but what about upstate? Or Westchester? Yeah, I have my doubts.

Maybe just celebrating national holidays is the right thing to do.

Nothing to do with work. This is a government run school program required to operate under the federal and state Constitutions.

As an employer, I can give people off every 3rd Tuesday or every Muslim holiday or whatever schedule I prefer. You're not even required (AFAIK) to give federal holidays off.
