Most of the time I'm only mildly amused or annoyed by the United Nations. This time I'm going to have to agree with those who say that it's lost and broken. In this case the topic is particularly moribund, addressing the protection of religion, pardon *one specific* religion, from "abuse". Let's cut to the quote...

GENEVA (AP) -- The U.N.'s top human-rights body approved a proposal by Muslims nations Thursday urging passage of laws around the world to protect religion from criticism.[...]

''Defamation of religions is the cause that leads to incitement to hatred, discrimination and violence toward their followers,'' Pakistan's ambassador Zamir Akram said.

''It is important to deal with the cause, rather than with the effects alone,'' he said.

Muslim nations have argued that religions, in particular Islam, must be shielded from criticism in the media and other areas of public life. They cited cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad as an example of unacceptable free speech.
''Islam is frequently and wrongly associated with human rights violations and terrorism,'' the resolution said.

So, much like the retarded kid at the back of the bus, Islam needs "special" protections because... well it's "special". Yeah right.

What the ambassador needs to recognize, along with all the other muslim nations that voted for this bullshit is the very nature of how Islam is conducted today. Hatred begets hated and if Islamic leaders weren't going around supporting murder, abuse, genocide, and general stupidity (e.g. polio vaccines are a tool to sterilize children) maybe people wouldn't make fun of them as much.

If you can't take the criticism then maybe it's time to stand up and change those things that make you the focus of ridicule. It's not wrongly associated with human rights abuses, it's *rightly* associated. Give women the same rights as men. Stop beheading people. Stop calling for violence. Stop advocating the elimination of people with alternative beliefs. Develop your nations rather than oppressing your people. Let everyone attend school.

Stop the hate from within your religion and maybe everyone else will stop making fun of you.

Unacceptable free speech? Methinks they don't understand how free speech works.

Also, the defamation of religion isn't what leads to anger and and discrimination. It's actually kinda the other way around. You see, when a religion preaches intolerance and hatred, we defame it and it's followers.

Perfect example: Fundamentalist Christians are made fun of for their hate speech about gays and atheists.

Buddhists on the other hand, who never say much of anything hateful, are very rarely mocked. Certainly, not on an institutional level like Islam.

When one of the main repeated talking points is the death of your enemy and the destruction of everything they hold dear, I don't get a real swell of pity when you complain about people making nasty drawings of your religious leaders.

There are millions of Muslims that don't deserve the paint brush the religion is painted with. Sadly, there are millions that do. Change that and you'll make a lot of progress on the reduction of hate speech. Until then, sit down shut the fuck up.

Im with you both. The Catholic church has had its ups and downs and its leaders AND congregation stood up against the corrupt members within the group. It doesnt help change the past, but it does present a better picture on the religion going into the future knowing the group as a whole stood up against the molester priests.

Islam needs to do the same thing.. stand up for yourselves and the opinions against your religion will slowly change for the better.

I'd be OK with this, IF and only if it went both ways. However, the ones complaining the most are a pile of hypocrites who wrap themselves in a blanket of self-righteousness. If indeed Muslims do not want criticism, then they should convince us through intelligent discourse and not threaten to kill those that find their interpretation of God to be an abomination.
