When things get shitty, people turn to comfort they can put in their mouth. I'm sure that smokes are probably on that list as well but no one has reported on an uptick in tobacco sales. Then again they're more expensive than paying under a buck for some candy so maybe people aren't dropping the dollars on carcinogens. Or they can't afford health care. Dunno.
Booze. It's cheaper to drink at home. Plus no one is going to judge you if you buy a gallon of cheap Tequila rather than the expensive stuff. It may have a nasty after-burn but it does the same job.
So much for the joy of wholesome, familiar foods like oatmeal and mashed potatoes, people want immediate gratification. They want bright, sweet and buzzed.
And really who can blame them? It's cheap fun, and if you put on a few pounds who the hell cares? It's not like the people at work will care...
